You Heard It Here First!

Let's Talk About It! already became a newsmaker.  Journalist Tim Elfrink wrote in the Miami New Times Blog today about the Florida Version of Arizona's new immigration law.

"Florida state Rep. William Snyder, the slow-drawling ex-Miami-Dade Police officer who has drafted Tallahassee's version of the hotly debated Arizona immigration bill, is adamant that his law would not lead to racial profiling.
"Race, ethnicity, and national origin cannot be used in making arrests. It's immoral, illegal, and unconstitutional," he said in a recent radio interview. So why does his bill explicitly offer a free pass to Canadians and Western Europeans, who need only show a passport to be 'presumed to be legally in the United States'?"

Oct. 17: Do Our Schools Suck? Let's Talk About It!

The recently released movie "Waiting For Superman" brought back the debate on our nation's education system. On Nov. 2, Florida’s voters will decide whether to keep the class size caps by voting no, or vote yes to remove it from Florida’s constitution.  But why does one of the richest countries in the world still have such a poor education system?  How do we fix it? We’ll hear perspectives from all sides of the issue, and hear directly from those on the frontlines: teachers and students.

Closing Thoughts on Our Show on Arizona's SB 1070 and "Comfort For Canadians" in Florida

Listen to this show.
This was our best show yet with some serious guests.
YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST.  The Florida Immigration Bill (if passed) EXEMPTS Canadians from having to prove legal status in Florida! Rep. Snyder called it a matter of comfort.

This week's guests included:

  • Florida Rep. William Snyder (R), the author of Florida version of Arizona's Immigration Bill
  • David Caulkett, Floridians for Immigration Enforcement (FLIMEN, self-described anti-"Amnesty" group
  • Felipe Matos, Students Working for Equal Right, Trail of DREAMS

For a full draft of the bill check here.  The Canadian provision is on the bottom of page 2 and top of page 3.
After that we spoke with the founder of the FLIMEN and Felipe Matos.  Here is the thing, in our opinion immigrants aren't the problem, the exploitation that allows immigrants to be hired below minimum wage, mistreated on the job, and overworked is the problem.  Funny thing is, David Caulkett sort of agreed.  But we still disagreed with the solution to this mess that hurts immigrants and citizens alike.

Lastly check out some links:

Finally a dedication to Solomon Burke, who passed away last weekend called "none of us are free".

We are the FIRST show to ask Representative Snyder why his bill allows Canadian and European (aka "visa-waiver") immigrants in Florida to be given a pass by law enforcement under the bill's provisions.  Yep, if the bill passes, Latino immigrants have to prove to Police that they are legal in the country, but Canadian immigrants and most European immigrants don't.

Closing Thoughts On The Housing Crisis

On the show, we had Max Rameau from Take Back The Land, Shannan Reaze Human Rights organizer extraordinaire, and Nicollo Mena a person with a 365 degree view of the housing crisis from the inside.

The show was title:  "Is the Housing Crisis YOUR Fault?" The show was great.  I think it is rare that you get such different and deep perspectives on the housing crisis.  So please give it a listen.
For those that caught the show, thank you.
In case you didn't, you can check it here

FEEDBACK FROM THE SHOW
We immediately received alot of feedback from the show.  Keep checking back on this site over the next day or two and I'll put up some responses to feedback.  The feedback that struck me the most was from our own sound engineer.  He really liked the last show on the tea party.  After this show, I asked him how he liked it. He told me "You know, I think it was good.  But so much of this stuff goes over my head.  I would be lying if I said I understood it all.  I guess they [the folks that ruined the economy] don't want us to understand these things."  Dead on.

Lets Talk About It is dedicated to getting all of us regular human beings to understand the complex stuff that affects our day-to-day.  So I want folks to listen to the show, but I think, moving forward, it is our responsibility to help break things down even more.

As a first step, the big one, the Federal Reserve.  I am gonna come back to this.  But in the meantime check this Nation article on the Federal Reserve.  It clearly hates the Fed but begins to break it down.

"Forty percent of all foreclosures are rental properties."

"Forty percent of all foreclosures are rental properties," said Shannan Reaze. Are you one of those renters?

"Homeowners are renters who paint their walls," explained Shannan Reaze. Do you agree? Are you one of these "renters"?

How should housing function in our markets? Listen now online!

"Holistic, systemic change is needed on how we view housing," Shannan Reaze, Miami human rights activist.

"Houses serve as profit centers for banks," Max Rameau,of Take Back the Land.

Plus…check our last show about the Tea Party here.

Hey Family,
...
Thanks to everyone that tuned in to hear and talk about the Tea Party. In case you missed it, you can listen to the recording here. Our closing thoughts on the Tea Party should be up soon.

This Sunday, same time same place (880am 2pm or online 880thebiz.com), we are going to talk about the housing crisis. We all know somebody in foreclosure, short sale, or that simply can’t make the payment on their house. We also know renters that got kicked out of their homes because the banks wanted them back. In short, the housing market sucks. It sucks to be an owner, a renter, or an investor. But whose fault is it? Is it the person that bought a house they can’t afford? Is it the banks that gave out bad loans? Is it investment firms that said that housing prices would never go down?

Most important: HOW THE HECK DO WE FIX IT? Well, Let’s Talk About It.

Tune-In Sunday, October 3rd from 2pm-3pm (880am or online 880thebiz.com)
